Guatemalan Blue Corn Seeds

We received this beautiful medium-sized corn, with blue, purple, and lilac hues, a few years ago from an acquaintance who brought the seeds from Guatemala and reproduced them on her farm in San Ramón de Alajuela. We have been reproducing it for about 3 generations on one of our production farms, seeking to adapt it to the conditions of our country. It is a very productive variety, and can be consumed fresh or dried for masa or flour, chicha, mazamorra, etc. Its purple color indicates that it contains many anthocyanins, which have antioxidant properties beneficial to health.

Plant several plants in the same space to ensure adequate pollination. It should be noted that it can easily cross with other nearby corn varieties if they are flowering at the same time.

How to use

• Direct sow 1–2 inches deep in full sun after the last frost, when soil temperature exceeds 60 F
• Plant in blocks of at least 4 rows for adequate wind pollination
• Space plants 12 inches apart, in rows 24–36 inches apart
• Water deeply and consistently during silking and grain filling
• Store leftover seeds in a sealed container, in a cool, dry, dark place
