Burmese Okra Seeds

Okra is a bushy plant, a member of the mallow family, native to Africa and Asia, whose tender fruits are very palatable. They can be prepared in delicious brines or traditionally in thick stews due to their high amounts of mucilage. This variety, originating from Myanmar, is characterized by starting to produce much earlier than other okras. The compact size of this variety is ideal for small gardens, and its fruits can reach sizes of 20 to 30cm without becoming tough.

Harvest the fruits when they are still tender, before they become hard and fibrous. In hot climates, the fruits grow very quickly, so they should be checked daily.

How to use

• Sow directly 1 in deep in fertile, well-drained soil, after the last frost and when the soil is warm
• Space plants 12–18 in apart, in rows 3 ft apart
• Water consistently — okra tolerates drought once established, but produces better with adequate moisture
• Harvest pods at 3–4 in for best tenderness — overly mature pods become fibrous
• Store leftover seeds in a cool, dry, dark place, in a sealed container
