Tomatoes are susceptible to fungal diseases that proliferate in high humidity conditions. Good spacing between plants and an adequate tying or staking system, as well as keeping the plants well pruned, help ensure proper ventilation and therefore less humidity. For large varieties, it is recommended to leave only 1 or 2 main stems (also called "leaders"), and for cherry-type varieties, 3 or 4 can be left.
